마이클 무어식의 유머가 영화 식코(Sicko 2007)에도 여지없이 녹아 있어서, 다큐멘터리 영화라는 한계점에도 불과하고 이 영화는 재미있다. (그가 발표한 모든 영화에 무어식 유머와 장난끼가 가득하긴 하다^^)
극장안에서 키득키득 웃는 사람들이 여럿이었다는 걸 보더라도 이 영화는 그저 미국의 의료보험제도를 지루하게 나열하기만 하는 그런 식의 영화는 아니다.
전반부에는 의료보험의 피해자, 의료보험회사의 정치적 로비로 정치인들을 매수하여 정책을 유지케 하는 수법들을 보여주고, 양심적인 보험회사의 의료이사진의 이야기를 통해 의료보험 회사의 존립 목적이 보험가입자의 생명보호와 건강증진에 있지는 않다는 충격적인 사실을 폭로한다. 보험료 청구자를 서비스 받지 못하도록 얼마나 떨어뜨리냐에 따라 의료심사원의 연봉이 차등지급되는것을 보여주는 대목은 섬찟한 사실이다.
후반부에는 영국의 NHS와 프랑스의 의료보험제도, 쿠바의 의료보험제도를 보여줌으로써 어떤 정책이 국민들을 위한 의료보험정책인지 관객들에게 묻는다.
많은 사람들이 소득재분배에대해 찬성하지 않을지 모른다. 왜냐면 병원에 별로 가지 않는데도 당장 자기가 돈을 매달 지불하니까. 하지만 내가 건강하더라도 우리 아버지들이 받은 의료혜택과, 내 자식들이 받을 의료혜택등을 생각해보면 내가 내는 보험료가 과연 비싸고 가치가 없는 것일까?
